About

The Scrambling EX
Peter Van Huffel (saxophone, clarinet)
Andreas Willers (guitar)
Devin Gray (drums)

A bass-less trio consisting of three forward-moving, attacking players may seem a little bit like a football team without a defence. Fear not though, The Scrambling Ex are never prone to expressionistic overflow or (even worse) shallow, over-regulated boredom. Sheer ability combined with tremenduous musical intelligence enables this ensemble from Berlin and New York to literally cover all bases.

TSX – a collaborative trio mixing musicians from two of the world’s hottest jazz and improvised music scenes – is a group that dedicates itself to composed material linked by enticing free-form improvisation. Guitarist Andreas Willers (.AAA., Grid Mesh, 7of8) and Canadian saxophonist Peter Van Huffel (Gorilla Mask, Kronix, Boom Crane) are both musicians with an outstanding reputation in Germany and across the European jazz scene; each are known for their individualistic musical styles and their unique and powerful instrumental approaches. American drummer Devin Gray (Dirigo Rataplan, RelativE ResonancE, VAX), who rounds out this trio, is one of the busiest and most enticing young musicians in the highly profilic Brooklyn jazz scene, and works as a leader and sideman with many of today’s top players around the globe. Together this ensemble delivers a colourful and unique approach in dealing with what can be called modern-day jazz composition, based on a soulful energy deeply routed in the intuitive process of spontaneous musical creation.
